Whisky Reviews

Laphroaig 10, 1980s, Pre-Royal Warrant (1994), 43% abv.

The bartender opened this new bottle since he found out I liked Laphroaig! From what I understand, so far Laphroaig is the only distillery to have the Royal Warrant of the Prince of Wales, which was awarded in person during a visit to the distillery in 1994. In the UK, a Royal Warrant is a symbol representing those who supply goods or services to a royal court or certain royal personages, in this case, the Prince of Wales.

Nose: honey, old wood.

Palate: very young, not alot of smoke, mostly wood and tofu.

Finish: surprisingly short.

Apparently the barkeep said the whisky is still young so it didn't open up. I also feel it doesn't fit a Laphroaig. Seemed too light. Or maybe I drank it too quickly? Didn't feel as rich as modern 10s. Had this at Bar Paradee, Yokohama, Japan.

Grade: C
