On the 50th year of Ron Zacapa, the distillery has, for the first time in its history, dipped its toes into the world of private blends. And who better to have one made for than The Rum Cartel. So it was at Origin Bar yesterday evening that members of the Rum Cartel were finally able to taste this liquid, and hear from Zacapa’s Master Blender Lorena Vasquez herself on its journey from cask to bottle.

Drawing inspiration from the Rum Cartel’s idea of a sophisticated rum blend for the purpose of sharing with its members and friends, Lorena chose liquids from only five casks, out of the many thousands maturing in their aging house in Quetzaltenango, with ages between 15 and 35 years, and bottled at a higher proof of 48% ABV.

And it was quite a wise decision to do so, as the blend was certainly far more elevated than its core range of rums. It was considerably intense, with a darker chocolate profile and cacao nibs, a touch of dryness, paired alongside candied oranges, and most interestingly of all was that particular note of adzuki bean paste or anko that I have yet to come across in any other rums. An undoubtedly unique release from the Guatemalan distilling house.
