Shedshaker Espresso Black Lager x Fugees - Killing Me Softly

This Singles Session is brought to you by the song that could be the best cover ever, Fugees version of “Killing My Softly”.

The original was composed by composed by Charles Fox with lyrics by Norman Gimbel. The lyrics were written in collaboration with Lori Lieberman after she was inspired by a Don McLean performance in late 1971. Lieberman released her version of the song in 1972, and then in 1973 Roberta Flack released a version which became a number one hit in the United States, Australia and Canada.

In 1996, Fugees recorded a cover of the song; after Pras made the suggestion to cover the 1970’s classic pop song. The resulting song samples break beats from “A Tribe Called Quest”, has a brilliantly simple drum track; a killer bass line and the beautiful lyrics from Ms. Lauryn Hill. Initially, Fugees wanted to change the lyrics of the song to make it anti-drugs and anti-poverty but the songwriters, Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox, refused.

In February 2016, Billboard reviewed the song, saying: "It's a lovely cover that maintains the spirit of the original while taking the material in new directions." Honestly, this comment really sums up the song perfectly.

Now for the beer, and a smooth moving track needs a smooth moving beer. Our friends from @shedshakerbrewing has delivered a beautiful shot of coffee into a lager, delivering the Espresso Black Lager. The brew is made up of organic, ethically sourced Tiger Mountain Arabica coffee from our friends at Coffee Basics and dark malted barleys with the spicy hit of American hops. A Schwarzbier style beer, it’s dark; with roasty flavours and chocolate notes which we love.
