Barrel Aged Fruited Imperial Sour, Heidenpeters

Uninspiring name yet the drink is anything but. So many things about this beer is great! Beautiful screen-printed glass bottle gives this beer such a nice touch and feel even before cracking it open. The nose screams spontaneous fermentation with the expected funky farm scent. Surprisingly, there is a sweeter and drier mango-like aroma accompanying the funk. Beer is incredibly carbonated and fizzy, showing that it had conditioned in the bottle nicely. The sour is mildly tart, acidic and funky whilst not overwhelmingly in any of those aspects. The beauty of the sour comes in its finish - sweet, fruity, dried apricots are so prominent in the finish for a farmhouse ale style beer and it transitions so well from the sour that came before. Not much yeasty and malty flavours after but the dried apricots definitely linger for a medium length finish.

Learnt so much about spontaneous fermentation at the Cantillon Brewery today that I am starting to appreciate farmhouse style ales that much more.

No idea what marsala casks are but I don't think they played a huge role in the flavour of the beer. Still a fantastic ass beer from a microbrewery in Berlin!
