The Rob Roy Cocktail

The Rob Roy Cocktail

  • 2 oz Macallan Double Cask 12 year Highland Single Malt
  • .75 oz Carpano Antica Formula
  • 2 dash Angostura Bitters
  • 1 dash Orange Bitters

Stir and strain into a cocktail glass or in this case a Nick and Nora. Garnish with 2 brandied cherries.

From 1894 -1895 an operetta based on the famous Scottish outlaw and freedom fighter Rob Roy McGregor ran at the Herald Square Theater in NYC. The popular show was the inspiration for the name of this Scotch based variation of the Manhattan, created at the recently opened Waldorf hotel (which wouldn't become the Waldorf Astoria until 1897). One rumor states that the reddish-brown color of the cocktail was supposedly meant to bear a likeness to the hair of the title character.

The original recipe didn't call for orange bitters, but I felt like adding them. Some recipes also call for a closer ratio of scotch to vermouth, but using a bold vermouth like Carpano Antica I opted for more scotch and less vermouth to avoid having it take over.

This cocktail is a great intro to scotch-tails as theyre sometimes called. It's easy to make and really showcases the scotch you choose. Regarding that, I chose the Macallan mainly because its what I had. Its also really good. It's smooth and approachable compared to something with a ton of peat or brine like an Islay. The great thing about this drink is your choice of scotch will change it entirely, so pick your favorite or experiment a little.
