This is a blend of Hanyu (ex-sherry hogshead), Glen Garioch (ex-sherry butt), and Longmorn (american oak ex-sherry hogshead). Bartender suspects it's 19% Hanyu. This series was inspired by Thomas Blake Glover, a Scotsman that was heavily involved in the industrialization of Japan back in the early 1900s. Family relations between Adelphi and Glover resulted in this series, which commands a decent premium on secondary. There are stories to the labeling as well, but IG doesn't give a lot of space.
Nose: oil, vinegar, smooth, honey coated candies, caramelized raspberries, figs, raisins, bbq-ed red fruits, salty. Seems to have a sherry influence. Hints of vanilla are present later.
Palate: light to medium body, initial palate is very sweet, hints of vanilla, mid palate shows some bitterness intially, abv spice builds up quickly, licorice, gummies, burnt old toast, subtle sherry elements, back palate shows boiled snap peas, bitterness re-appears, more bread, a certain sourness like old vinegar on young bread. The sherry elements aren't very stable and seem to come and go.
Finish: short to medium, mineral water, hints of honey, dull crackers, menthol and quite cool with time, frozen berry mix, green grape "raisins", light cranberries.
An interesting one in that it doesn't seem to show much of either old Hanyu or old sherried Longmorn/Garioch. Sherry-like elements persist up front. It's a little confusing as flavors appear all over the place and the sherry aspect wasn't something I could clearly pinpoint.
