Penderyn Distillery has announced the historic launch of its first age-statement whisky: The limited edition, 25-year-old Penderyn Barrel No.1.
Founded in 2000, the distillery has taken over two decades to build up the depth of stock and maturity required to release official age statements.
Released as part of a series of celebrations timed around St David’s Day (1 March), this expression was drawn from a single Sherry butt, and will soon be joined by a 12, a 21, and a 25-year-old age statement expressions in a phased release.
Early access begins in February with pre-orders for the 25-year-old, followed by the 12 and 21-year-old expressions in May.
Stephen Davies, CEO of Penderyn Distillery, spoke about the significance of the milestone: "When Penderyn started 25 years ago, our ambition was clear: to bring back Welsh whisky and give it a voice on the world stage. We now have the depth of stock and maturity to do that with confidence. Our new Aged Statements are not about nostalgia — they're about progression, patience and pride."
In addition to the new range, Penderyn will launch its Icons of Wales No.14: The Village in early March. The Amarone cask-finished Welsh single malt is available to pre-order now.
The release marks the 100th anniversary of Portmeirion village, designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis beginning in 1926, and a programme of events and tastings is set to take place during Wales Week London (21 Feb to 7 March).
Penderyn will also be hosting two events as part of the festivities, aimed at highlighting The Village and its Aged Statements: One event will take place at the Portmeirion Village in North Wales, and the other at The Whisky Shop in Piccadilly, London.
Davies added: "The Village and our aged whiskies together represent Welsh imagination and independence at their finest. 2026 isn't just another milestone year — it's the moment Welsh whisky truly comes of age."
With three distilleries across Wales — located in Llandudno, Swansea Copperworks, and the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) National Park — Penderyn boasts a combined annual production capacity of 900,000 litres of alcohol, with its visitor centre seeing more than 100,000 visitors annually.
The first release is in a batch of 420 bottles that will retail for £1,200 (US$1,637) each.
Penderyn's products are currently sold throughout the UK and exported to more than 50 countries, including the US, Canada, France, Germany, China, Taiwan and Japan.
