The Last Drop Distillers Unveils Its First Tequila For 40th Release Inaugurating Casa San Matias To The Panel

For its 40th release, the famous The Last Drop Distillers has launched an extra añejo Tequila, also the first Tequila in its history.

The Last Drop Release No. 40 Extra Añejo Tequila is made with 100% Blue Weber agave that was nurtured for up to a decade in Jalisco, and then aged in three casks: two ex-Bourbon barrels for ten years and a Port pipe for seven years.

The house has said that the Tequila offers notes of roasted nuts and spiced oak, tropical pineapple and vanilla on the nose. The palate is touted to have notes of dulce de leche and cooked agave, followed by plums, dates and hints of green jalapeño skin.

The liquid was created by Tequilera Carmen Villarreal, the newest member of The Last Drop Assembly - a panel of spirits experts who collaborate with the brand.

Villarreal is the current steward of Casa San Matías, one of Mexico’s oldest family-owned Tequila houses. While the house has been distilling since 1886, Villarreal joined the family business in 1997 following the death of her husband, Don Jesús López Román.

Under her direction, Casa San Matías made history by producing the world's "first" extra añejo Tequila in 1991.

Each 700ml bottle is individually numbered and bears the signature of Villarreal. It comes housed in a handcrafted wooden case that also includes a 50ml miniature, a tasting book, a cork stopper, and a set of wooden coasters.

Bottled at 46.3% ABV, only 435 bottles are available worldwide, each with a MSRP of US$2,300.
