Spirit Of Speyside Festival Proves The Narrative Wrong By Breaking 27 Year Historical Record With US$677,000 In Ticket Sales

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival has broken its historical record with ticket sales surpassing £500,000 (US$677,000), a first in its 27-year history.

Held in Speyside from April 29 to May 4, the festival featured over 600 events. Demand was high, with nearly 7,000 tickets sold on launch day and 60 events selling out, including a cèilidh (traditional Scottish social gathering) at Craigellachie Distillery.

Since its 1999 launch, the Spirit of Speyside has grown into a 27-year tradition that injects over £2.2 million (US$3m) into the local economy annually. The festival returns next year from 28 April to 3 May 2027.

The 2026 festival drew a global audience, with over 60% of visitors arriving from 40+ countries.

One key highlight the event offered was rare access to several Speyside distilleries typically closed to the public. Independent bottler Duncan Taylor, for instance, opened its doors to the public for the first time in its history during the festival.

The Tormore, Craigellachie and Dalmunach distilleries also opened for fans to explore their facilities, while other events included a falconry display, canoe trips and a silent disco at The Glenlivet.

Some distilleries, such as Tamdhu, also released limited edition expressions for the festival.

The festival comes at a period in time when the Scotch industry is facing a downturn, with falling demand prompting InchDairnie, Rosebank, Glenglassaugh, and Isle of Harris distilleries to pause production or cut staff.

Major players are also scaling back: Diageo proposed closing the Clynelish visitor center, while Suntory Global Spirits scrapped an Ayrshire maturation project and merged the Bowmore and Laphroaig distillery teams.

There is some good news, however, as US president Donald Trump said last week that he would remove the tariff on Scotch whisky.
