Rhum Rhum Liberation 2024 Is Back After Four Year Hiatus With Oldest Releases Till Date

In 2005, legendary Italian rum distributor and bottler Velier's chief Luca Gargano had sought to collaborate with iconic grappa and eau-de-vie distillery Gianni Capovilla to reimagine agricultural rums. And so in the Caribbean island of Marie Galante, the pair would set out to create a new style of agricultural rums.

Using a Müller still fitted with a bain marie, cane juice was allowed to undergo an extended fermentation of 6-8 days, where after it was then distilled and aged in casks (most even sourced from the highly lauded Chateau d'Yquem in Bordeaux, most known for its sweet Sauternes wines) - in another interesting twist, the rums bottled would be called Rhum Rhum, with the vintage cited as its Liberation date marking the year in which the rum was released from barrel, instead of the more standard labelling of stating the year as when the barrels are filled. Each iteration of Rhum Rhum would see two releases, with one labelled as Intergrale, which indicates that it is of cask strength or full proof. The first release of Rhum Rhum came in 2009, with five vintages released till date. Each set of bottlings features naturalist drawings of local floral and fauna.

Now after a four year hiatus, Rhum Rhum is back with its oldest bottlings till date - the Rhum Rhum Liberation 2024!

Once again, it's worth noting that the 2024 marks the year in which the rums were bottled from its cask, and so the rum is actually produced some time back, although at the moment the year in which it was distilled has not been stated.

Official Tasting Notes

Color: Old Gold

Aroma: Fresh, elegant. Intimately linked, aromas of encaustic (wood wax, varnished paper), cane honey, lime, curry, green fig, and tropical fruits (banana, mango, pineapple) provide enormous complexity to an aromatic palette that is otherwise floral (reseda, carnation), tarry, and camphorated.

Taste: Full-bodied, smooth. Evoking sugarcane freshly cut, the flavor palette is honeyed, fibrous, and heady (cane flower). Then, becoming vanilla and fruity (orange, kaffir lime), it evolves into herbaceous (reed, gorse), medicinal (mustard seed), and juicy (cane juice) registers.

Finish: Long, full-bodied. With beautiful density, it extends by revealing notes of aquatic and vegetable plants (watercress, water lily, zucchini flower) full of freshness. Noblely woody (oak stave) and spicy (ginger, nutmeg), the retro-olfaction invites you to savor a delicious gentian liqueur.

Official Tasting Notes

Color: Deep Old Gold.

Aroma: Both fine and deep. Medicinal (tiger balm), lemony, candied (pineapple, banana), honeyed (acacia), sweet (cane sugar), floral (rose, lily), and delicately caramelized, the aromatic palette is revealed in all its complexity. Upon aeration, it opens with aromas of Armenian paper and pipe tobacco.

Taste: Lively, slender. Close to sugar cane, the taste palette evolves harmoniously towards flavors of cinnamon, candied ginger, lime, toffee, and vanilla bean. With a pleasant fibrous, licorice, and saline bitterness, it becomes heady (geranium) and honeyed (linden, chamomile).

Finish: Dense, fine. Elegantly tarry and oily, it is in turn vanilla, praline, and heady (dried flowers). Tropical (pineapple, kaffir lime, yellow kiwi), rooty (gentian, ginseng), and powdery (cocoa, ginger), the retro-olfaction offers a flourishing and solar synthesis of the nose and mouth.
