Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey Unveils Charred Barrel Expression Black Reserve

Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey has introduced a new expression to its growing range: A blend finished in heavily charred American oak barrels.

The new Black Reserve, the brand's fourth expression to date, comprises of a blend of single malt and grain whiskeys, aged for a minimum of four years in first and second fill American oak casks, after which the finish takes place in heavily charred ex-Bourbon barrels.

The use of heavily charred barrels is said to intensify the expression’s bold ex-Bourbon cask flavours, with rich caramel, toasted wood, soft vanilla, and sweeter notes.

Brand owner Proximo Spirits' Executive Vice President of Marketing and Innovation, Lander Otegui, said the release is a continuation of what the brand has always stood for: expert craftsmanship and over four centuries of distilling and blending know-how. He noted that the toasted wood and deeper caramel character from the charred barrels, balanced against a softer vanilla sweetness, serve as a strong showcase of that heritage.

Proper No. Twelve is a blended whiskey triple-distilled at the Bushmills Distillery, initially launched in 2018 by UFC fighter Conor McGregor and acquired in 2021 by Proximo Spirits for US$600 million.
