Shanghainese craft gin distillery Peddlers Gin Company has created a gin tasting of a classic childhood snack for its Chinese New Year limited release.
The Tanghulu Street Candy Gin pays homage to the snack of tanghulu, or red hawthorns on a stick that are covered with melted malt sugar, forming a crunchy sugar shell. Often had in the winter seasons, it remains a popular snack to both children and adults.
To make this gin, the distillery started with their own bespoke London Dry style Gin, which was then infused with Tang Hulu-inspired botanicals; hawthorn, Guangdong liquorice, and strawberry as well as juniper, coriander seed, Nanjing angelica, Buddha’s Hand citrus.
On the nose, the brand says the gin opens with strawberry and Buddha’s Hand citrus, followed by a palate of tart-sweet hawthorn, which is then finished with classic notes of juniper and angelica.
Said to be playful, balanced, and highly drinkable, it is presented as a Chinese twist on the concept of a sloe gin.
