Masataka Taketsuru is often billed as the Father of Japanese Whisky, with his voyage to Scotland and studies in Scotch-making, which he later brought back to Japan and applied to establishing Japan's first forays into whiskymaking, well documented and often told to those who first get to know Japanese whiskies.
His work later culminated in the establishing of Hokkaido's Yoichi Distillery, and subsequently the Miyagikyo Distillery in Sendai, which together form the twin engines of the Nikka Whisky house, which today stands as one of Japan's foremost whisky producers.
That said, this merely scratches the surface of his far reaching impact and influence which has allowed the Japanese whisky story to continue to develop and unfold more than 100 years on, and as such, his importance cannot be overstated.
And so, Nikka Whisky of course has a flagship brand that continues to pay homage to the man, the myth, and the legend that is Masataka Taketsuru - that is the Taketsuru Pure Malt!
Now going into 2026, it appears that we'll have a new exploratory series into the iconic Taketsuru Pure Malt brand, in the form of the new Taketsuru Pure Malt Japanese Whisky Essentials, with the first release in what looks to be a five-part series due to be bottled in 2026, coming in at 43% ABV!

This is a Malt Whisky named after Nikka's founder Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky, who mastered whisky-making in Scotland and brought this expertise back to Japan. Inspired by his pioneering spirit, this expression brings together carefully balanced malt characters.
The "Essentials" series is a limited collection of five expressions capturing the core of TAKETSURU PURE MALT. The first release highlights traditional coal-fired distillation at the Yoichi Distillery, Nikka's birthplace, enhancing savoury depth while retaining delicate harmony.
Gentle aromas of mature casks are followed by a full-bodied palate of malt sweetness and peaty depth, finishing with a lingering sweet and subtly bittersweet aftertaste.
As we've seen from the Nikka Discovery series, the historic Japanese whisky producer absolutely loves delving into what makes its whiskies tick, and of course, we're all for it! It'll be interesting to see what follows in the rest of the series as it unfolds!
Kanpai!
