Kanosuke Drops Double Distillery 2025 Limited Edition Doubling Down On Shochu Casks

Kanosuke is continuing to build on its twin cylinders that's firing at full speed, and as such remains resolute in emphasising the blending of whiskies from both its distilleries, Kanosuke Distillery and Hioki Distillery.

Now it's worth remembering that the Hioki Distillery actually came before Kanosuke Distillery, and has historically been where the parent company Komasa Jyozo has long made its famous barrel-aged Shochu's. Yet with the massive success of Kanosuke Distillery expanding the Komasa family's foray into Japanese single malt whiskies, the Hioki Distillery has since been retrofitted to also produce pot still whiskey. This has meant that Kanosuke as a whisky brand has access now to the whiskies of two distilleries - the combination of which is therefore Kanosuke's Double Distillery Japanese Whisky.

And so in this new Kanosuke Double Distillery 2025 Limited Edition, the whiskies of both Kanosuke Distillery and Hioki Distillery are therefore blended, with in particular the pot still whiskey from Hioki Distillery matured in Komasa Jyozo's iconic Mellowed Kozuru Shochu casks (which pioneered barrel-aged Shochu), where specifically re-charred ex-Shochu casks have been used to age the whiskies. The use of recharred ex-Shochu casks have of course been well applied at Kanosuke Distillery, and has certainly been a huge hit, yet we've not thus far seen an example from Hioki Distillery.

The vatting of several recharred ex-Shochu cask aged whiskies from both distilleries was then aged first in Sherry casks, before being finished in recharred ex-Shochu casks. Finally, this was then blended with rum cask aged Hioki pot still whisky for the final expression.
