Jose Cuervo Unveils World's First Mole-Finished Tequila In Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia Anejo Private Cask Collection

Jose Cuervo's small-batch Reserva de la Familia brand has announced the Private Cask Collection Edition No. 2: Mole Cask, an expression finished añejo Tequila in barrels seasoned with mole (a traditional sauce containing fruits, nuts, chili peppers, and spices).
Reserva de la Familia explained that mole, which dates to 17th-century Puebla and Oaxaca, layers 20-40 Indigenous and Spanish colonial ingredients into distinctive recipes that vary by region and family.
Distilled at La Rojeña, the "world's oldest" Tequila distillery, the small-batch spirit uses agaves hand-trimmed with the "jicama cut" to keep only the sweet core. The agave is slow-roasted in 1812 brick ovens, fermented with proprietary yeast, and double-distilled.
The Tequila is aged in new American and French oak barrels, before a three-month finishing in medium-toasted new American oak casks that have been seasoned with Oaxacan red mole.
The expression is said to boast notes of cacao, spice, dried fruit and pepper.
The launch continues the ultra-premium brand’s partnership with the Michelin Guide US, featuring a seven-part video series that kicks off with Oaxaca chef Jorge León and his mother Elvia, of Alfonsina in Oaxaca, preparing their acclaimed mole.
The Tequila also featured in Tales of the Cocktail’s Passport Dinner Series, paired with a collaborative menu from three restaurants: Emeril’s in New Orleans, Mexico City’s Pujol, and San Francisco’s Californios.
Bottled at 40% ABV, the Reserva de la Familia Private Cask Collection Edition No. 2: Mole Cask is available for presale and will be stocked at select US retailers from September. Each 750ml bottle has an MSRP of US$120.
