Habitation Velier Marks First Philippines Rum, Joined By Classics Foursquare And Chamarel

Habitation Velier has constantly made big strides in bringing to the world's rum community under the radar new rum-makers from every corner of the world, sniffing out rums that most have never tasted or have heard of before - whilst also keeping up with the classics. It's a tough job, but that's why Habitation Velier proves they're the greatest to ever do it - all pot still distilled from a single distillery, and therefore all pure single rums!

This time we have a newcomer from the Philippines - meet Rainforest Distillery.

As we're told, Rainforest Distillery which produces the was founded in 2021 by Marc Schulze, located in Bukidnon, on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines archipelago. Rainforest Distillery is said to be the first of the country to produce agricultural rum, under the brand name Kasa Kaña. For the Habitation Velier Rainforest 2024, a local cane variety Manpu was fermented for 10-12 days with the addition of dunder and muck, which was then distilled in a pot still and subsequently aged in ex-Chardonnay White Wine barrels. The rum was aged for 14 months upon bottling.

Official Tasting Notes

Color: Bright Gold.

Aroma: Lively, expressive. Initially, intense aromas of fresh cane juice, pineapple, lime, and coconut milk permeate the entire olfactory space. Upon aeration, subtle vanilla, camphor, and herbaceous (freshly cut cane) aromas gradually appear.

Taste: Clean, slender. Crossed by medicinal sequences full of character (aspirin, mustard poultice), the taste palette is supported by flavors of licorice and sugar cane. Then, gradually, cane sugar spreads delicately over the tongue and the walls of the palate.

Finish: Fine, smooth finish. Floral (mimosa, broom, vetiver), it is also particularly fruity (pear, pineapple, kaffir lime). This tangy and juicy influence reaches its peak when we enjoy a delicious lime and basil tart. Similar to cane juice, the retro-olfaction displays spring tones of remarkable freshness.

Habitation Velier Chamarel 2017

Produced by double pot still distillation, this version selected by Velier has aged in barrels that previously contained Cognac. The Habitation Velier Chamarel 2017 is aged for 8 years.

Official Tasting Notes

Color: Deep Golden Yellow.

Aroma: Fine, complex nose. Numerous tropical fruits (kiwi, pineapple, banana), aromas of verbena and vetiver, spices (ginger, cinnamon), vanilla pods, cane honey, warm cane sugar, and some medicinal notes (mustard mustard) enrich a constantly evolving aromatic palette

Taste: Slender, dynamic. Heady (wallflower, geranium), honeyed (acacia), and empyreumatic (menthol, eucalyptus), the taste palette reproduces all the tropical fruits of the nose one after the other. Then, evolving towards more medicinal, camphorated, and spicy tones, it gradually becomes syrupy (cane sugar), vanilla, and citrusy (lime, kaffir lime).

Finish: racy, invigorating. At once oxidative (roasted pineapple, flambéed banana), fibrous (sugar cane), and smooth (cane honey), it is refreshed by a very pretty mentholated, almost aniseed sequence. Delicately chocolatey, licorice, and spicy (cinnamon), the retro-olfaction demonstrates a remarkable maturity of expression and unites tropical fruits, cane sugar, and camphor under the same banner.

Habitation Velier Foursquare 2013

Official Tasting Notes

Color: Orange-Copper.

Aroma: Fine, complex. Animated by a fruity rancio (orange, apricot), chocolatey, and spicy (candied ginger) aroma, the aromatic palette is remarkably fine and elegant. Upon aeration, aromas of heather honey, dried fruits (date, hazelnut), and old plum brandy give it a resplendent maturity.

Taste: Ample, full-bodied. Supported by flavors of sweet candy sugar and a pleasant herbaceous bitterness (sugar cane), the taste palette echoes the mature and rancid character of the nose (orange, apricot, prune). Then, silky, it evolves towards more powdery (cocoa), vanilla (pod), and medicinal (ointment) registers.

Finish: Long, smooth. In the perfect medicinal continuity on the palate, it gradually takes on heady (geranium, clove) and spicy (cardamom) tones. On the retro-olfaction, flavors of molasses harmoniously intertwine with notes of black licorice, precious wood (sandalwood), roasted mango, and dried apricot.
