England's Historic Breaky Bottom Vineyard Of English Sparkling Wine Fame Goes On Sale

For the first time since opening in 1974, pioneering English wine estate Breaky Bottom has hit the market with a guide price of £4 million price tag. 

The Sussex vineyard was originally founded by the late industry trailblazer Peter Hall, who recently passed in October last year. One of the oldest and most revered vineyards, it is tucked away in a secluded South Downs valley near Lewes. 

Knight Frank’s viticulture team will be bringing the estate to market, alongside the lasting powers of attorney for his widow, Christine Hall.

The £4 million sale includes the complete vineyard business and facilities: a four-bedroom brick and flint farmhouse, a traditional Sussex barn operating as the winery, dedicated storage and labeling spaces, agricultural outbuildings, and the established vineyards.

Peter Hall’s youngest son, Toby Hall, said the family hoped the estate would continue to evolve while preserving its heritage: “The next custodian of these precious acres has a wonderful opportunity to build on the Breaky Bottom legacy and create new stories of their own."

Regarded as one of the founding fathers of English wine, Hall personally planted the original six-acre vineyard and oversaw decades of production, yielding roughly 10,000 bottles annually.

When Breaky Bottom launched in 1974, it was one of just seven vineyards in the entire country. Even as Britain's wine scene exploded to over 1,300 vineyards, the legendary estate refused to chase volume - earning its prestige through small-scale precision, painstaking craft, and unfailing quality.

His sparkling wines have since graced major national milestones, including the London 2012 Olympics, Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, and the coronation of King Charles III.

Now spanning around 15 acres with roughly six under vine, the estate focuses on two sparkling cuvées: a signature Seyval Blanc and a Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier blend introduced in the early 2000s.
