Don Julio Releases New Sweet Smoky Ceniza Anejo

 

The famed Don Julio has released a sweet and smoky añejo described as the brand’s first dark añejo Tequila: Ceniza

A brand new expression for the Mexican market, this expression was toasted and charred in specially selected barrels. A symbol of renewal and transformation, the fire is said to impart notes that elevate the expression’s flavour with a distinct smoky character.

The act of charring and toasting in barrels is also said to have resulted in a sweet and smoky profile with deep notes of cacao and cooked agave. Pairing the expression with intensely flavored Mexican dishes also comes highly recommended.

It's still unknown, however, if other brands will embrace the term "dark añejo." The "extra añejo" tequila category alone was only officially recognized only in 2006. Similarly, "cristalinos"—now a common sight on shelves—were initially called "añejo claros" before the industry settled on a more memorable name. It remains to be seen if Don Julio can successfully create a new category of tequila.

The product is available across a range of retailers in Mexico with an MSRP of MXN$1,129 (US$60). It will also be available in Colombia by the end of the year.
