Taste Testing The Velier Uitvlugt 1997 ULR

Released 1997

Another Uitvlugt, another Velier, this time aged 17 years and aged entirely in the DDL warehouses. A more or less recent bottle but already to be placed in the 'collectors' category, with the price that goes with it...

Price : 140€ (that was at the beginning), 70cl, 59.7° and 1,404 bottles.

Age : 17 years spent in the tropics, distilled at the distillery of the same name via the Savalle Still (mark: ULR). And an angels' share that exceeds... 77%.

ULR for Uitvlugt Light Rum. We leave the world of blends for a so-called 'light' rum that comes from the Savalle still, a 4-column still that can produce rums of different styles, more or less rich, depending on the needs and desires (for example, Albion, Blairmont or Skeldon).

The color is a deep amber, tending towards bronze, the dress oily as desired (like any self-respecting Velier Demerara).

On the nose, after a smell of glue/adhesive that fades rather quickly (but will return), we find a very gourmet rum, with lots of coconut and marzipan, almond paste, chocolate, vanilla, caramel; in short, as you can imagine, and without warning, we could be seized by an irresistible desire to bite into it... cardamom and cinnamon for the spices, without forgetting the liquorice, and a little bit of tobacco to support the whole. A gourmet and tenacious nose, but rather light for the style, and with a certain metallic smell that hangs over it.

In the mouth it is very rich, oily and even creamy and sweet on the coconut that we find without difficulty. Varnish, liquorice and candied fruits (apricot, orange marmalade) mix together, for a very pleasant little pina colada effect. A little menthol effect too, which gives a nice hold in the mouth for a rum of a beautiful intensity, very lively and gourmet.

The finish is very long, on coconut again and a burnt woody, liquorice, and the orange which also returns (bitterness of the zest). Very nice persistence for this rum which delights us, even once disappeared, with mentholated, liquorice and fruity hints.

A very pleasant Velier, easy to access compared to others; we are not at the level of a UF30E, no, but perhaps becoming one? If we had to find a key word, it would be: coconut, it is so present and brings a certain deliciousness to this Uitvlugt. Note: 86

To help you (and me) find your way around, regarding the notes:

90 and + : exceptional and unique rum, it is the best of the best
between 85 and 89 : highly recommended rum, with that little something that makes the difference
between 80 and 84 : recommendable rum
75-79 POINTS : above average
70-74 POINTS : in the low average
less than 70 : not very good
